Along with publishing and editing magazines each month, I manage my own Substack, Savvy, writing about the complexities of adulthood and womanhood.

Local chef & bartender opening a New York & Parisian inspired wine shop & tasting bar

Adam Fleischer has spent the past 32 years of his life in the food & drink industry. He opened a small eatery near campus decades ago, he’s worked as a chef, a sommelier, a server, a bartender, and he’s even owned local shops around town in the past.

And he’s not stopping there. Fleischer, his artistic wife, Samantha Smith, and their business partner, Amy Ashcraft, are opening a cozy, New York-meets-Paris inspired wine shop – making this Fleischer’s first time opening his own store from the gro

Longtime Columbus radio station signs off air today; we look back at their history and impact

They’ve been serenading us to and from work every day, rain or shine, making our commutes a little brighter with their hand-selected, alternative rock tunes, uplifting voices, and their dedication to the community in general. Needless to say, 614, and the rest of central Ohio, are going to miss WWCD 92.9 setting the soundtrack for our lives and for the city.

WWCD was established in 1990, and throughout its 33-year old history, they’ve committed to being a vital component of the Columbus communi

It’s officially ‘cuffing season’ – here’s 10 cool dates to go on in Columbus

Data shows there’s a propensity to seek out a partner in the cooler months – otherwise known as a phenomenon called “cuffing season.” And really, there’s no better way to make someone want to stick it out through the dreary gray days of winter with you than to plan some incredibly cool dates for them.

The days of “Netflix and Chill” are over, to be frank. After being cooped inside during the pandemic, and the rise of online dating fatigue, going out on physical dates is more important (and fun)

138 year old meat & cheese shop is saying farewell

In 1886, a German immigrant opened a stall at Columbus’ Old Central Market, selling processed meats and other “old world” items. This entrepreneur, Alois ‘Grospop’ Thurn, who was working out of his South Front Street home, quickly realized he’d need a shop due to his tremendous success. In 1890, he bought property off of Greenlawn Avenue, and this old meat processing plant, Thurn’s Specialty Meats, can still be seen today. In 1965, however, the Thurn family constructed a new meat processing plan

Highly-anticipated High St. restaurant & bar announces they’re opening next week

You may have noticed an addition to South High Street, either by driving by or seeing posts circulating on social media of an enormous yellow and black sign, adorned with a snake bearing its fangs, and the words “COBRA – A Good Night Bar,” in the space that once held a Panera Bread sign.

The hype around Cobra’s opening is all for a good reason – Asian-American bar fare offered late at night, made by experienced, respected chefs, cocktails crafted by some of the best bartenders in the city, all

R&B vinyl dance party finds home in Olde Towne East bar

Pop into Olde Towne East’s cherished cocktail bar, The Oracle, on the third Saturday of the month, and you may be surprised to find that you’ve been fully transported to Candy Rain – a 1990’s house party where local DJs spin 90’s-2000’s R&B vinyl while everyone else sweats their hearts (and cocktails) out on the iconic checkered dance floor.

DJ Lady Sandoval, otherwise known as Sara Rose, dreamed of a space where “girls, gays, and theys” could gather and dance away to the vinyl she’s been colle

Something new & buzzworthy is brewing at Parable…and nope, it’s not coffee

Parable is already known for being a popular coffee shop and prominent space to hangout at, but it’s about to level up (and we didn’t even know that was possible). On Wednesday, May 17th, they acquired a liquor license, and according to co-owner Ben Willis, their newest concept of a coffee shop by day, cocktail and natural wine bar by night, “…is going to be great – one of the best places to hangout in Columbus.”

Guests can soon look forward to a thoughtfully curated selection of biodynamic, na

Local photographer captures veteran saluting at parade; nation rallies to successfully find him

Ryan J. Childress, local Westerville photographer, could have never imagined that a photo he took at his daughter’s Christmas parade would garner national attention and provoke a city-wide scavenger hunt for a man in a green jacket.

On December 3, Childress captured a photo of a gentleman in a green jacket saluting as the service flag corps made its way down the street, marching proudly in the parade.

“The man caught my attention because he reminded me of my own father,” Childress explained. “

Fourth oldest building in Cbus is being renovated into a music venue with 2 bars + restaurant

Concerts, performances, and even really good dirty martinis can all be considered “holy experiences,” and soon, there will be an entirely new meaning to that.

When Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) first bought the Central Presbyterian Church 13 years ago, after the congregation officially moved elsewhere, they didn’t necessarily have a plan to renovate it right away. Chad Whittington, CAPA’s CEO, explained that they were focusing on other projects, such as renovating the Ohio

Savvy (Substack)

My sweet, rich, beautiful child-free week!

“Do you ever think about how…hm…you couldn’t have done a lot of things in your life, or even this week, if we had children? That everything would have been different even just this week?” I asked.

Mark and I were on our morning walk together, admiring our cute dogs sniffing the ground. I was overcome with an immense amount of gratitude for the week that had gone by.

“Nah. I stopped measuring my life in ‘if we had children or not’ the moment we were sure we didn’t want them,” Mark replied matte

The Time I Injected Botulinum Toxin Into My Face

I was staring into my bathroom mirror, moving my eyebrows as far up as they could go, and scrutinizing the tiny, soon-to-be-gone wrinkle that sat right above my left eyebrow. Of course, it was only noticeable when I did this frantic eye raising, but that was enough for me to freak out at one of the first signs of…well, me aging, I guess. It was the night before my first injection appointment (I chose Dysport instead of Botox after some obsessive research), and I was so excited to change this par

Moved to Tears

I cringe when I see people whirring about town on Segway tours. So, for me to book a bicycle tour, solo, in Coyoacán (a city about 20 minutes away from Mexico City central) was a giant leap right out of comfort zone. The thought of participating in such a thing was borderline embarrassing for me — clearly an ego problem on my part. If it wasn’t for the raving reviews from my friend, Sara, convincing me this is something that I had to do, I would have never even considered a 4 hour bike tour, and

Home Alone

No matter how incredible and authentic my relationship with my spouse is, it can sometimes feel like I have to be “on” — like I need to be intentional with most of our moments together. Even having the friends you’re the most comfortable with come over can still feel like putting on a show. Obviously I try to be fully myself around others, but there are some things that we only do when no one is around and I know you know exactly what I mean because you’re a person, too. This weekend, I was remi
